FILE UNDER: Death metal
Through The Eyes Of The Dead - SkepsisAlternative Press - Scott Heisel on 2/2/10 @ 10:52 AM - altpress.com
Hammering out relentless blast beats, guttural bellowing and frenzied guitar lines for nearly a decade, South Carolina death metal zealots Through The Eyes Of The Dead issue another unsurprising yet sensory-obliterating experience with third full-length Skepsis. Delving deeper into their Cannibal Corpse obsession while still managing modest deviation, this 10-track affair boasts the cryptic atmosphere and full-frontal assault of said Tampa-based kin yet fosters a slightly more clinical delivery reminiscent of Gothenburg's post-At The Gates shift and Carcass-esque trade-offs between tectonic growls and banshee-eque screeches. Combined, they make for some truly uncompromising bouts of bestial onslaught via the likes of the ravenous "Dementia," the raging "Perpetual Defilement" and the borderline-cacophonous title track. While not exactly a dynamic foray that pushes the borders of death metal, Skepsis is still a haven of bombastic familiarity in its why-reinvent-the-wheel sensibility built on pummelling riffs and vibrant technicality.
